Over the past eight years doing my Ph.D. and working with clients, I’ve compiled a long list of writing resources that I’ve used for my own writing and in writing consultations. I categorize them into three topics: 1) general writing guides, 2) career-related guides, and 3) research.
Way before I started Dr. Write-Aid, I had listed everything in one page on my personal website, doreenhsu.wordpress.com, but now that I’ve started my own business, it’s about time I updated and reorganized everything. I’ve also added short comments to explain what I like about them!
I hope to keep this list updated, so please feel free to email me at doreen@drwriteaid.com if any links are broken or if you have suggestions for other resources.
If you find this list helpful, please share with your friends, students, colleagues, and so on!
Using Evidence
- Purdue Owl Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing Guide – Super useful when writing literature reviews and avoiding the common pitfalls of he say/she say/they say: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/using_research/quoting_paraphrasing_and_summarizing/index.html
Citing Sources
- Citation software comparison guide – this chart is really helpful for deciding which software to use. I highly recommend using a citation software as soon as possible to make your life easier. https://ucsd.libguides.com/howtocite/compare
- Purdue Own citation guide – refer to the guides for your citation style: https://owl.purdue.edu/owl/research_and_citation/resources.html
Sentence-level Concerns
- Common sentence-level writing concerns, especially helpful when revising – https://docs.google.com/document/d/1N1qjZ5zdkiGqIxQGxC4pWSqaKjmXIjM2hTAjihDorho/edit?usp=drive_link
Revising
- Reverse outlining guide – making a reverse outline of what you’ve already written can be really helpful for revising your work. I like this guide to start out with. https://www.uah.edu/images/administrative/student-success-center/resources/handouts/handouts_2019/reverse_outlining.pdf
- Another reverse outlining guide with more details – https://www.crk.umn.edu/sites/crk.umn.edu/files/how-to-make-reverse-outline.pdf
- Re-Order Extravaganza Worksheet – this is also a nice place to start from. I modified this doc from a worksheet I used to use while working at the UCSD Teaching and Learning Commons. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v-r7XNa5IVQmpX4rQ4WxyC3HgOh72TyHHDVCVroTA8g/edit?usp=sharing
Making Presentations and Flyers
- Public Domain Image Archive hosts more than 10,000 out-of-copyright historical images to explore and reuse. Lots of super interesting artwork across the world that you can sort by artist, dates, medium, etc. – https://pdimagearchive.org/galleries/all/random/desc
- Canva for making visually appealing flyers, graphics, social media posts using templates – https://www.canva.com/
- Slidesgo for making visually appealing slideshows using templates – https://slidesgo.com/
- Twitter post with thread of platforms for finding FREE visuals (icons, stock photos) for presentations, lectures, and websites – https://twitter.com/rodriguesjm6/status/1476580189316562953?s=20
I hope to compile my next writing resource masterlist for career-related projects – for writing CVs, resumes, cover letters, academic job application documents, and more!
What are some writing guides or resources you enjoy using? Let me know in the comments!
